Running the Sahara

February 21, 2007

I used to think that the Badwater Ultramarathon was the hardest run one could attempt. And then, today I came across this attempt to run coast-to-coast across the Sahara. Three people ran the 4700 miles in 111 days, running 98% of the way. Just looking at the map is mind-boggling to me. While fitness and endurance are clearly some important issues, there are a lot of operational issues caused by that constant running. For instance, the clothes you wear are constantly rubbing against your skin. The skin on the upper side of your feet are constantly rubbing against your shoes. A lot of care and consideration must go into these tiny details in order for the runners to concentrate solely on the running. There is a movie being made, which will be narrated by Matt Damon. Can’t wait for it to be completed.
